Spoilers ahoy, people. If you haven’t seen The Force Awakens, click away now.
The very first line is Star Wars is uttered by Max Von Sydow’s Lor San Tekka:
“This will begin to make things right”.
The “this” that he’s talking about is the Star Wars version of a USB key, containing the final piece of a map pointing out the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker.
I don’t know why, but I’m fascinated by Lor San Tekka, his history, and how he came to intercept information crucial to Luke Skywalker’s whereabouts. The official Star Wars wiki offers up precious little about his background other than that he’s a member of the Church of The Force. Though we don’t know much about him, we do know that he’s aware of Kylo Ren, of Ren’s true identity, of Ren’s family, and seems to be especially loyal to Leia, calling her “royalty”.
Much like Tatooine, Jakku is a convergence point, so it seems more than a coincidence that somebody so close to Leia and with obvious off-world connections as to come in to possession of a hotly pursued item would be positioned on the same world as Rey. San Tekka has to be more than what we saw, doesn’t he? Obviously he’s dead and not coming back but if he knows who Rey is (again, it seems too much of a coincidence that he’s on the same world as Rey), then Leia knows who Rey is and just hasn’t told us anything. Not verbally, anyway. The way Leia looks at Rey, the hug she gives her at the end of The Force Awakens are not the way I’d envision Leia treating a perfect stranger. Rey is somebody, Leia knows it, and San Tekka, in my view was on Jakku, by Leia’s request, to watch over her from a distance and keep her safe until such time that adventure calls.
San Tekka is an interesting character in that he could have told us so much more if Kylo Ren wasn’t such a tempermental hot-head. I’m sure we’ll learn more about him, probably through novels or comics, but I have to think he’s more than just a guy who randomly comes in to crucial data and forwards it on to the resistance.
